01 / YOUR COVERAGE REVIEW
What bundling home and auto actually means
Bundling generally means placing eligible home and auto policies with the same insurer or an affiliated insurance group. They usually remain separate contracts, with separate coverage terms, limits, deductibles and policy periods. A shared account or multi-policy discount does not turn them into one policy that covers everything.
For Maryland homeowners, reviewing the policies together can reveal gaps that a premium-only comparison misses. A Baltimore homeowner adding a teen driver, a family buying in Owings Mills or a household facing renewal increases may benefit from checking both sides at once. Lion Insurance Group is an independent agency; we help evaluate options through available represented carriers rather than promising that one approach fits everyone.
Home premium + auto premium + coverage details
Compare the combined annual cost, then check limits, deductibles, exclusions and settlement terms. A larger advertised discount does not necessarily mean a lower final price or a better coverage fit.
02 / THE DETAILS THAT MATTER
How multi-policy discounts may work
An insurer may apply a discount when a household has eligible policies together. The discount might apply to one policy, both policies or certain premium components. Eligibility can depend on the home, drivers, vehicles, policy forms and carrier rules. There is no guaranteed Maryland bundle discount or percentage that applies to every customer.
Separate policies can sometimes cost less overall, especially when one insurer fits the property well and another fits the drivers better. A bundle may also offer simpler account management or coordination, but billing and service arrangements vary. Ask how pricing changes if one policy is later canceled or moved.
| What to compare | Bundled policies | Separate policies |
|---|---|---|
| Total annual premium | Add the final home and auto premiums after eligible discounts and applicable fees. | Add both final premiums, including any discounts available independently. |
| Home protection | Review dwelling value, roof settlement, water backup and personal property terms. | Review the same details using comparable limits; do not accept a hidden reduction to make the price match. |
| Auto protection | Check liability limits, drivers, vehicles, deductibles and optional benefits. | Use the same drivers, vehicles, usage and coverage selections for a useful comparison. |
| Liability coordination | Ask whether the arrangement meets any umbrella requirements. | Confirm whether an available umbrella accepts underlying policies from different insurers. |
| Renewal and service | Check billing arrangements, renewal dates and what happens if one policy changes. | Plan for separate renewal reviews and keep both insurers informed of relevant changes. |
We do not guarantee a particular savings amount, insurer acceptance or the lowest price in the market. A useful comparison explains both the cost and the tradeoffs.
03 / THE DETAILS THAT MATTER
Protect the comparison from hidden coverage changes
Home rebuilding cost and roof terms
Keep the dwelling estimate appropriate for the property rather than lowering it to reach a target premium. Compare replacement cost with actual cash value, roof payment schedules and ordinance or law limits. Review water backup and flood separately. Our Maryland homeowners insurance guide explains these decisions in more detail.
Auto liability and physical damage
Confirm bodily injury and property damage limits, uninsured/underinsured motorist choices and applicable injury-related coverage. Compare collision and comprehensive deductibles, rental reimbursement and roadside terms. Tell the agency about all household drivers, vehicle use and recent changes. See our Maryland auto insurance guide for the broader coverage review.
Deductibles remain important
A home deductible and an auto deductible generally apply under their own policies. Do not assume one deductible applies when the same storm damages both the house and car. Any combined-loss benefit would need to be expressly provided by the insurer’s terms.
Consider the next liability layer
If you want more liability protection, discuss personal umbrella insurance alongside the bundle. Required underlying limits can influence both home and auto selections. An umbrella does not increase coverage for damage to your own house or vehicle.
04 / THE DETAILS THAT MATTER
Coordinate dates without creating a coverage gap
Home and auto renewal dates may differ. It can be possible to move one policy first or align future dates, but midterm changes can affect billing, refunds, fees or discount eligibility. Compare the transition cost as well as the quoted annual premium.
Review current policies and dates
Use declarations pages and current renewal offers, including mortgage billing and auto lender information.
Confirm the new arrangement
Verify policy terms, named insureds, effective dates, required payments and insurer acceptance. A quote request is not coverage confirmation.
Coordinate cancellation carefully
Do not cancel an existing policy until replacement coverage is confirmed effective in writing. Check any mortgage, lienholder and Maryland vehicle insurance obligations during the transition.
05 / THE DETAILS THAT MATTER
Good reasons to review your household insurance
A renewal increase is one reason, but so are renovations, a new roof, a home purchase, a move, a new vehicle, a teen driver, retirement or a changed commute. Finished basements, valuables, rental activity and a home business can alter the coverage conversation even when nothing has happened to the premium.
Home pricing may reflect location, construction, roof condition, replacement values, claims and deductibles. Auto pricing may reflect garaging, vehicles, drivers, driving history, mileage, usage and selected coverages. Carrier rules and available options differ; a household change may affect the home, auto and umbrella in different ways.
An independent agency can help organize these details and compare available options, including whether keeping policies separate makes sense. That does not imply access to every insurer or guarantee that a bundle is available.
06 / THE DETAILS THAT MATTER
Two existing questionnaires. One coordinated conversation.
Start with the homeowners questionnaire and use its optional Home and Auto Bundle section, or provide details through the existing auto questionnaire as appropriate. Let the agency know you want the policies reviewed together. There is no need to create a new account or complete a separate bundle intake form.
- Current home and auto declarations pages and renewal dates.
- Home address, construction, square footage, roof details and renovations.
- Vehicles, VINs, household drivers, usage and garaging information.
- Claims and driving history, current limits and deductible preferences.
- Mortgage and auto lender details where applicable.
- Upcoming changes and any existing umbrella coverage.
Use the approved encrypted questionnaires for requested sensitive details. If you prefer to start by phone, call 410-500-3322 or contact Lion Insurance Group about a household coverage review.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Maryland Home & Auto Insurance Bundles: FAQs
Is bundling always the least expensive choice?
No. Compare the final combined annual premium for comparable coverage with the cost of separate policies. Discounts, eligibility and each insurer’s pricing can change the result.
Are home and auto combined into one policy?
Usually they remain separate policies with their own terms, limits, deductibles and dates. A multi-policy arrangement may affect pricing or account management but does not eliminate those differences.
Do both policies need to renew on the same date?
Not necessarily. Carrier rules and effective-date options vary. Review transition costs and discount eligibility before changing dates or canceling existing protection.
Where do I request a home and auto comparison?
Use our existing homeowners quote questionnaire and its optional bundle section, or the existing auto quote questionnaire as appropriate. Tell the agency you want both policies reviewed together; no new bundle form is needed.
