How Much Does Car Insurance Cost in Maryland?

Car insurance cost in Maryland depends on your drivers, vehicle, garaging address and coverage choices. A statewide average cannot tell you what your household will pay. To find a useful price, compare personalized quotes with the same limits, deductibles and drivers, then check the total cost for the same policy period.

This guide explains Maryland's required coverage, what changes your premium and how to compare offers. For help selecting coverage, visit our Maryland auto insurance service page. If you have your information ready, start your auto insurance quote.

How much should you expect to pay for Maryland car insurance?

There is no single monthly or annual price that applies to every Maryland driver. A published average is only useful when you know the date, driver profile, location and coverage used. A minimum-coverage estimate and a quote that includes collision and comprehensive insurance are different products.

The Maryland Insurance Administration's auto insurance rate comparison guide lets you select a scenario resembling your household and compare sample premiums in your area. These are reference prices, not an offer of coverage; you may not qualify for every insurer shown. Check the guide's dates and assumptions before using a sample as a benchmark.

For your own comparison, ask each insurer for the total premium, policy term, down payment and installment fees. A six-month premium and a twelve-month premium cannot be compared directly. Ask whether any quoted discount depends on bundling, automatic payments or participation in a driving-monitoring program.

What auto insurance does Maryland require?

Maryland's minimum liability limits are often written 30/60/15:

  • $30,000 bodily injury per person: for injuries to one person when you are legally responsible for an accident.
  • $60,000 bodily injury per accident: the total bodily injury limit when multiple people are injured.
  • $15,000 property damage per accident: for damage you cause to someone else's vehicle or other property.

Maryland also requires uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, with minimum bodily injury limits of $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident, and $15,000 for uninsured motorist property damage. This is separate from liability coverage that pays others when you are at fault. Policy terms and deductibles apply.

Personal injury protection (PIP) generally has a $2,500 minimum and can help with covered medical expenses and lost wages, regardless of fault. Eligible people can waive certain PIP benefits under Maryland rules. Ask whose benefits a waiver removes before choosing it to reduce your premium.

For newly issued Maryland auto policies beginning July 1, 2024, enhanced underinsured motorist coverage (EUIM) is the default unless you opt out. Ask how EUIM differs from standard underinsured motorist coverage and compare the same selection on every quote.

Legal minimums are not a recommendation for every household. A serious accident can exceed these limits, leaving you responsible for costs beyond what the policy pays.

Minimum coverage vs. full coverage: what changes the cost?

“Full coverage” is not a standardized policy or a promise that every loss is covered. People commonly use the term for liability coverage plus comprehensive and collision, alongside required coverages. Ask for the actual coverage list rather than comparing that label alone.

  • Collision helps pay for covered damage to your car from a collision, subject to your deductible and policy terms.
  • Comprehensive helps pay for covered non-collision losses such as theft, hail or a falling tree, subject to your deductible and policy terms.
  • Rental reimbursement and roadside assistance are separate options; do not assume either is included.

Maryland's liability requirement does not itself require comprehensive or collision, but your lender or lease agreement may require them. A higher deductible may reduce the premium while increasing what you must pay after a covered loss. Choose an amount you could afford.

Why do Maryland car insurance quotes vary?

  • Garaging location: where you keep the vehicle matters. Use your actual address, whether in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Pikesville, Owings Mills, Towson or elsewhere in Maryland. A quote for a different ZIP code is not a reliable comparison.
  • Drivers and driving history: household drivers, experience, accidents, violations and past claims can affect pricing and eligibility.
  • Vehicle and use: make, model, repair costs, annual mileage and commuting can affect the quote. Tell the agency about delivery, rideshare or business use so it can review potential coverage gaps.
  • Coverage and deductibles: higher liability limits, physical damage coverage and optional benefits change what you are buying.
  • Insurance history and discounts: prior coverage, lapses and insurer-specific discounts can affect available options. Carriers do not evaluate every factor identically.

How to compare Maryland auto insurance quotes

  1. Start with your declarations page. Gather current limits, deductibles, endorsements and the policy term, plus vehicle details, household drivers, mileage and garaging address.
  2. Request matching coverage. Compare the same liability limits, uninsured/underinsured motorist selection, PIP choice, collision and comprehensive deductibles, and optional benefits.
  3. Compare the full payment schedule. Review the total term premium and any payment fees, rather than the first payment alone. Confirm which discounts are included and their conditions.
  4. Check gaps before switching. Review exclusions, lender requirements and any household umbrella policy's required underlying limits. Confirm the replacement policy's effective date in writing before canceling existing coverage.

Keep sensitive information out of general contact forms or chat. Use the detailed auto quote questionnaire when you are ready to provide the requested driver and vehicle information.

How can you potentially lower your premium?

Correct inaccurate mileage, vehicle use or driver information first. Ask about multi-vehicle, good-student, driver-training and payment discounts where available. Eligibility varies by insurer; no discount or savings amount is guaranteed.

If you own a home, compare Maryland home and auto insurance bundles against separate policies. Compare the combined cost and both policies' coverage, rather than assuming a bundle always costs less. Review deductibles and optional benefits, but understand what protection you give up before removing coverage.

When should you review your Maryland auto policy?

Review coverage at renewal, after a move, when a teen begins driving, when you replace a car or when your commute or vehicle use changes. If your renewal premium rises, ask what changed and compare matching coverage with available insurers.
